Fluoroplastics Series (2) - What are the Applications of PFA?
2023/11/28 202

In our last article, we mentioned that Yize Mould has successfully designed and fabricated a number of PFA tube fittings.

However, as a material with excellent physical and chemical properties, PFA's application prospects go far beyond that. So, what are the applications of PFA?

In industry, PFA is often used as various coatings, linings, and even astronautical equipment due to its chemical stability, thermal stability, and non-stick properties, and is widely used in many fields such as construction, chemical, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, and medical. In addition, the cleanliness level of PFA is often higher than that of PTFE, so in recent years PFA has also begun to be used in the semiconductor industry, which are used for handling silicon wafers for ultra-large-scale integrated circuits. According to Mordor Intelligence, in 2018, in terms of the global PFA consumption structure, chemical process, oil & gas industry, and electrical insulation materials are the top three applications of PFA.

Chemical industry: in the chemical industry, the commonly used vessels are beakers, flasks, etc., PFA as a liner can well prevent chemical corrosion and protect equipment and reagents. Compared with FEP, which has similar chemical properties, PFA has higher continuous use temperature and better stress crack resistance;

Semiconductor industry: the integration of semiconductor components to improve at the same time, the manufacture of its equipment materials put forward high corrosion resistance, high heat resistance, and high purity requirements. PFA has to meet these three high technical requirements and good molding, so PFA has become the semiconductor industry, a variety of production processes used in the raw materials of the equipment.

Machinery, food industry: PFA powder coating of non-stick, heat and corrosion resistance, so that it is widely used in photocopier rollers anti-stick, food processing machinery, hoppers, rollers, molds, containers, sieves and polyurethane foam molding molds such as anti-stick coating. For example, in the light bulb coated with PFA film, due to the high-temperature coating film is strong, plays a protective role, and is not easy to adhere to the soot, improve the brightness of the light, but also to reduce the cost of cleaning and maintenance.

The above is a part of PFA's wide range applications, and Yize Mould had designed and manufactured some PFA products according to customers' request. However, until today, the market share of PFA in fluoropolymers is still less than 1%, while PTFE occupies about 50%, why? In the next article, we will compare the similarities and differences between PFA and PTFE.
